ADVOCACY OF PAPUA SEPARATISM BY BENNY WENDA AND VERONICA KOMAN: SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT AND FRAMING ANALYSIS
West Papua is known to be part of the Republic of Indonesia but some political movements consider that the region does not actually belong to the Republic of Indonesia that leaves the region with many issues of separatism. Advocacy of separatism has been attempted by Benny Wenda, a West Papuan living in exile in UK and Veronica Koman, an activist and lawyer, living in exile in Australia. Both Benny Wenda and Veronica Koman have actively involved in advocacy for West Papua freedom by means of Twitter social media. This research studies the content of Benny Wenda and Veronica Koman’s tweets and retweets on Twitter using the content analysis method to identify framing they use in support of their advocacy of West Papua separatism in 2019 and 2020. The result of the study suggests that they have been using the frame alignment strategies that consist of frame bridging, frame amplification, frame extension, and frame transformation; and framing elements of metaphor, exemplar, catchphrase, deception and visual figures.
Keyword: advocacy of separatism, media content analysis, Twitter, tweets, retweets, framing alignment, frame elements.
